Last November, Aegis attended the two-day 16th Annual International Finance and Accounting Conference (AIFAC 2025), hosted by The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Trinidad and Tobago (ICATT) themed Future Ready: Innovation, Transformation, Resilience. It delivered more than presentations – it delivered perspective.
From global economic pressures and changing trade dynamics, to the rapid pace of digital transformation and sustainability demands, one message was clear: business as usual is no longer enough.
Among the many strong presentations, one story stood out above all.
The keynote by Senator the Honourable Kama Maharaj was not a corporate lecture – it was a real Trini story. A business started from a kitchen table. A global beauty brand built with grit, courage and relentless innovation. His growth from founder of Sacha Cosmetics to Minister of Trade, Investment and Tourism perfectly embodied the conference theme.
It was a reminder that: Great businesses don’t simply grow. They are intentionally built.
Some powerful lessons that stayed with us:
- Vision is not wishful thinking – it’s leadership.
- Innovation must be embedded into culture, not triggered by crisis.
- Transformation must happen before disruption, not after.
- Partnerships are engines of scale and sustainability.
- Resilience is not survival – it is strategic strength.
The economic outlook discussions were equally powerful. We heard real insights into:
- Shifting energy markets
- Foreign exchange challenges
- Digital payments transformation
- Export development opportunities
- Sustainability reporting and compliance
- The increasing importance of data, AI and automation
AIFAC 2025 reminded us that the accountant’s role is changing fast – from historian to strategist, from compliance officer to advisor, from reporting to foresight.
Just as importantly, it gave space to conversation around national development. Trade expansion, agribusiness, tourism growth and digital economy development aren’t abstract policy ideas – they’re real opportunities for business transformation.
It was energising to engage with leaders, to reconnect with colleagues, and to share ideas about where our profession and our country is headed. We left inspired. We were left challenged. And we left ready.
The future doesn’t arrive by chance, it’s built with intention.
