Built on Governance, Strengthened by People

Reflections from the Journey of Aegis Corporate Governance Services

By Lisa Creese, Manager, Corporate Governance Services

Where Opportunity Knocked, We Answered

There is a saying that governance is the backbone of an organization. If that is true, then for the past 25 years I have had the privilege of helping to strengthen that backbone, one client, one challenge and one milestone at a time.

When I joined the journey that would become Aegis Business Solutions, I could never have imagined how much the world of corporate governance would change. What began as a small team focused on helping clients meet their compliance obligations has evolved into a department that supports organizations through increasingly complex regulatory, governance and business environments. Looking back, I see more than legislation, filings and corporate records. I see relationships built, lessons learned, challenges overcome and a team that has grown together through every stage of the journey.

In those early years, our work centred on compliance. We assisted clients with company incorporations, the registration of foreign companies, liquidations, annual returns, board changes and work permits. In fact, our work permit service began because a major energy company approached us with a need and provided training that enabled us to meet their requirements. It was an example of something that would become a hallmark of our department which is responding to opportunities, adapting quickly and finding ways to serve our clients.

Growing with Every New Challenge

Corporate governance was a very different landscape then. The introduction of the Companies Act 1995 created significant changes for businesses across Trinidad and Tobago. Companies established under previous legislation had to navigate continuance requirements and new compliance obligations. For our team, that period brought both challenges and opportunities as we helped clients understand and meet their new responsibilities.

Although governance and compliance remain at the heart of what we do, the department has continuously evolved. Legislative changes, regulatory developments and the growing needs of international clients have required us to expand our expertise and services. Over the years, we introduced offerings such as Authorized Officer services, support for the Companies Registry Online System (CROS), Beneficial Ownership filings, and services related to the transfer and issuance of shares. Each new requirement pushed us to learn, adapt and grow.

The People Behind the Process

What makes me proudest is the resilience of our team. Corporate governance is often highly detailed work involving multiple stakeholders, strict deadlines and constantly changing regulations. Yet our people have consistently risen to the challenge. We have remained committed to maintaining compliance with regulatory bodies and delivering reliable service to our clients. The positive feedback we receive, the referrals from satisfied clients and the number of clients who continue to return to us over the years are powerful reminders that our efforts make a difference.

Learning, Adapting, Evolving

Of course, the journey has not been without obstacles. One of the greatest challenges has been keeping pace with regulatory and technological changes. The introduction of systems such as CROS required us to learn entirely new processes and adapt quickly to a changing environment. These experiences taught us the importance of remaining diligent, agile and constantly aware of developments affecting our profession.

Yet beyond the technical expertise, what I treasure most is the culture we have fostered. We have always strived to be more than colleagues. We have tried to be a family. Over the years, I have watched team members grow professionally, start families, overcome personal difficulties and support one another through life’s challenges. Seeing that level of care and encouragement has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

If I were asked what moment best captures the spirit of Aegis, I would think of January 2025. Faced with a critical CROS deadline, team members volunteered their weekends, travelled across the country and worked tirelessly to ensure clients’ filings were completed on time. That moment reflected everything we value: teamwork, commitment, diligence and an unwavering dedication to our clients.

Governance with a Human Touch

As I reflect on the past 25 years, I am filled with gratitude. Gratitude for the mentors who guided me, the colleagues who became friends, the clients who placed their trust in us, and the countless experiences that shaped both my career and our department.

The Corporate Governance Department’s story is ultimately a story about people. It is about individuals who embraced change, tackled challenges head-on and remained committed to delivering excellence, even when the path was not easy. From navigating new legislation to adapting to technological transformation, we have continued to evolve while staying true to the values that define us.

A Future of Possibility

As Aegis celebrates this remarkable milestone, I look ahead with optimism and confidence. The regulatory landscape will continue to change, new challenges will emerge, and client expectations will continue to grow. But if the last 25 years have taught me anything, it is that success is built on people who are willing to learn, adapt and support one another.

My hope is that when people think of Corporate Governance Services at Aegis, they do not simply remember the work we did. I hope they remember the trust we earned, the relationships we built and the commitment we demonstrated every single day. That, to me, is the true legacy of the past 25 years, and the foundation for the years still to come.
